Don't forget once we've finished its a quick nip home for a shower and then back for the Slipway laying supper in the evening, a hearty meal and some gossip to end the day.

Hi all,

The re-vamp of the clubhouse is under way! As you know, we are planning to carry out some major works over this winter to extend the ladies' changing room and galley and refurbish the gear store. In addition, the lounge and corridors need a lick of paint and there are a number of other jobs that we need to do to get the clubhouse looking brighter and ready for the 2010 season.

The next work party is scheduled for this weekend (from 10.00 on each day), and if you have even a couple of hours to spare, please come down and lend a hand - there are jobs for everyone, young and old, skilled and unskilled!

If you can't make it this weekend, there are other work parties over the winter period (see the Christmas Splice for details), or please feel free to come down anytime and check out what work needs to be done from the list on the wall by the bar - just let us know what you would like to take on and we will supply the materials!

There's a limited period so can you please beg from all your contacts to collect for our benefit. Smiling at the checkout girls and boys and asking politely for any spares also works.

Become a qualified RYA Power Boat Instructor

Become a qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor

Dear Members
We are in urgent need to train additional instructors to the Level of Dinghy Instructor.

The cost of this course will be £50, this is a financial supported course by the RYA so all you have to do in return is help with a minimum number of agreed training sessions at Herne Bay Sailing Club.

The course will be run at Herne Bay sailing Club during May.

Europe nationals 05/09/2009 & 06/09/2009

Herne Bay Sailing Club hosted the 2009 International Europe Class British Open and National Championships over the first September weekend.

With the previous day's training session cancelled due to strong winds the competitors were happy to see a force 4 south westerly at the start of proceedings on Saturday morning. There was a steady chop which made for some interesting sailing with wind against tide. There was an excellent contest between Chris Catt, Gareth Williams and the Belgians, Gaetan Van Houtte and bart Decouttore, with Chris Catt of Downs SC leading over night.

On day 2 the wind dropped but there was still no let up in the closely fought races with Gill, Catt and Williams fighting it out with the Belgian lads. Our own Hannah Golton, having never sailed a Europe before took the prize for the first youth sailor, well dome Hannah.

RYA Hornet National Championships 05/09/2009 & 06/09/2009

The Hornets descended on Herne Bay SC for their 2009 National Championships. On the Saturday, the breeze was a force 4 westerly with a wind-over-tide chop making it an excellent contest. In the first race places swapped throughout with Peter Bennett and John Shelton from Shoreham SC flying down the off-wind stages to win the first race. The Herne Bay contingent were all placed in the second half of the fleet having chosen to stay put wide on the beats whilst the leaders chose the middle of the course.

Pro Sailor

Saturday Sailing!

With the assistance of the RYA, the club has employed Claire Gibson as ‘Pro-sailor’ to help and advise new members and novice sailors within the club.

This is a great opportunity for those who felt that weekends were only for the speed fanatics to come down and race, to have the opportunity to enjoy what you joined the club for – TO SAIL, and to add to your present skill levels in a relaxed learning environment.

On Thursday we had our cruise to Tankerton and although the trip there was on the slow side the way back was much more like it.

On Wednesday it was the last cadets day and prizes were given, big thank yous go to all the organisers and helpers!.

On Tuesday we had a visit from Tom Hawkins (Foreshore Inspector for Canterbury City Council) who gave safety lessons to all cadets.
